The sitter was an internationally renowned orchestral conductor, grandson of Thomas Beecham, inventor of 'Beecham's pills' (a laxative). The sitter was briefly an undergraduate at Wadham in 1897. He was co-founder (with Malcolm Sargent) of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and founder of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
