Sir Stanley Marchant (1883–1949) is depicted seated on a chair with wooden arms, turned to the right, looking to the viewer. He wears a grey suit, blue tie, white shirt and spectacles, and holds a small book in his left hand. Printed music by Johann Sebastian Bach rests on his music stand. An organist and composer, Sir Stanley was Principal of the Royal Academy of Music 1936–1949. Prior to this he held the position of organist of St Paul's Cathedral, and King Edward Professor of Music of the University of London. He was also an amateur watercolourist and in the early 1940s he collected a series of paintings, mainly watercolours, done by his musician colleagues, for display in the Academy.
