Sir Robert Lorimer (1864–1929) worked for the architect G. F. Bodley in London before establishing an independent practice in Edinburgh, his birthplace. His early work reflects the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, but later he showed himself capable of designing in many different styles, from Gothic to Classical. Although he designed a diverse range of buildings, he is best known for his domestic architecture. This portrait of Lorimer, aged 22 and apparently working on a design for a wrought-iron gate, was painted in 1886 by his brother John.
