Irish-born Sir Richard Quain (1816–1898), Bt, was an extremely successful physician, attaining many distinguished positions. In 1850 he wrote a groundbreaking paper on fatty regeneration of the heart, which established him as an authority on the disease. He was vice-president of the Royal College of Physicians, a consulting physician to the Royal Naval Hospital at Greenwich, and in 1890 he became physician-extraordinary to Queen Victoria. In 1891 he received a baronetcy. Quain also worked as a general physician at Harley Street, where he treated politicians including Benjamin Disraeli and many authors, painters and officials. He shared many high professional confidences, and once let slip publicly that Lord Northbrook was to be appointed to the viceroyalty of India in 1872.
