Sir Richard Blackmore (1654–1729) was a poet and physician. He studied at the University of Padua before settling in London. Blackmore was a prolific writer, in prose and verse, on religion and history, and he published papers on the plague, fevers, the spleen and metabolic diseases. He was also favoured by William III, who appointed him as physician-in-ordinary in 1697.

Blackmore was elected as fellow to the Royal College of Physicians, London, in 1687. He later clashed with the RCP over its plans to set up a free dispensary for the poor, an idea which he strongly opposed.

The portrait is attributed to John Closterman (also spelled Cloosterman or Klosterman), a portrait painter born in Osnabrück, Germany.
