Raymond Unwin (1863–1940) is intimately connected with the design of Brtain’s first garden city, at Letchworth, Hertfordshire (begun 1903). The success of Letchworth was such that he and his partner, cousin and brother-in-law Barry Parker were asked to design Hampstead Garden Suburb (1906). Unwin had trained as an engineer although his career was made in architecture and town planning. After Hampstead, Unwin diversified into wider issues of town planning and by 1914, he was so highly regarded that he was appointed Chief Planning Inspector under the Local Government Board. Although he retired from the Civil Service in 1928, his advice was sought on significant town planning issues until his death. He was President of the Royal Institute of British Architects 1931–1933, knighted in 1932 and was awarded the Royal Gold Medal in 1937.
