Three-quarter-length portrait in the sixteenth-century Venetian manner of Sir Oliver Lodge, the first principal of the University of Birmingham. From 1900 to 1919, he came to Birmingham from University College Liverpool, where he had been Professor of Physics and Mathematics. He became a spiritualist and believer in the 'aether' after his son Raymond was killed during the First World War and wrote many books on the subject including 'Raymond, or Life and Death'. University of Birmingham Special Collections houses Lodge's correspondence. There is a similar portrait by the same artist in the National Portrait Gallery.
