Sir Michael Tippett (1905–1998) was a student at the Royal College of Music from 1923–1928 and 1930–1932, studying both composition and conducting. A voyage of self-discovery throughout the 1930s and early 1940s, which saw the evolution of his political and aesthetic beliefs and reconciliation with his sexual orientation as well as the development of his compositional voice, preceded his steady rise in prominence after the Second World War. Pannett's portrait dates from a watershed point in Tippett's carreer, coinciding with the composition of the Second Symphony and the opera 'King Priam', which mark the beginning of his modernist period.
