Howard joined the Coldstream Guards in 1943, earning a Military Cross. After finishing his Oxford degree, he joined the Department of History at King's College London (1947) and was key in creating the Department of War Studies and the Centre for Military Archives, becoming the country's first Professor of War Studies (1964), and held professorships at Oxford and Yale. He helped establish the International Institute for Strategic Studies; was twice appointed vice-president of the British Academy (1978–1980), and is author of books on military history. He received the NATO Atlantic Award and the Paul Nitze Award from the US Center for Naval Analyses. He was knighted (1986) and awarded the Order of Merit (2005). The portrait, painted from life in Festing's studio took five days to complete.
