In this portrait of her great friend, Kauffman presents Sir Joshua Reynolds as a man of style and culture. He sits beside a table strewn with papers and periodicals (Johnson's 'The Idler', Burke's 'Sublime and Beautiful' and Goldsmith's 'The Traveller') next to an engraving of an antique sculpture, behind which is Daniele da Volterra’s bust of Michelangelo. Michaelangelo was an artist whom Reynolds revered and he features in his Self Portrait of 1780 (now in the Royal Academy). Reynolds is wearing van Dyck costume, fashionable during the reign of George III.
