Jean Jules Salmson was a French sculptor, known for his ability to produce high-quality bronze sculptures. This statue is one from a group of sculpture depicting historical figures, like artists such as Joshua Reynolds, Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyke.

It is one of two sculptures by Salmson in this style in the museum's collection, other being a statue of William Hogarth.
