The swashbuckling Sir John Talbot died from wounds inflicted upon him when he acted as a second in a duel. His friend Francis, 11th Earl of Shrewsbury, duelled with George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham (his wife's lover). Francis was 'run through the body from the right breast through the shoulder' whilst Sir John was wounded 'all along up one of his arms'.

John Talbot is also said to have been the first person to receive Charles II upon his landing in England. When he died, he was succeeded by his grandson, John Ivory Talbot (1691?–1772). There is a monument to him in the church at Lacock.

Another version of this portrait hangs in the dining room at Lacock.
