Sir John Soane was a renowned architect of the late Georgian period, specialising in the Neo-Classical style. As well as holding the post as Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy he was also a Fellow of the Royal Society and Architect to the Bank of England.

Only a few of the buildings he designed have survived to the present day, the best known is his own house in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, now a museum displaying his eclectic collection of artworks and antiquities.

Soane was an early member of the Royal Institution (Ri). In 1799 he was given the task of assessing a townhouse in Albemarle Street to see if it was suitable to turn into a scientific institution; following his report the property was purchased and the Ri has been here ever since.
