Borlase served as a soldier in the Low Countries, and went with Sir Horace Vere's expedition to the Palatinate in 1620. He was appointed Master of the Ordnance in Ireland in 1633, and in 1640 was made a Lord Justice there. This portrait, which is signed and dated by the accomplished Dutch artist Miereveld, was painted during Borlase's time in the Netherlands.
