Sir James Stubbs (1910–2000) was the Grand Secretary, or Chief Executive, of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1958 to 1980. The initials that follow his name in the title are both civil and Masonic. The first set (KCVO) denotes his position as Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. The second set (PSGW) denotes his additional role as Past Senior Grand Warden at the United Grand Lodge of England. He was also knighted in 1979 for his work as Grand Secretary. This portrait was commissioned by the United Grand Lodge of England and is one of a series of portraits of past Grand Secretaries. It shows Sir James Stubbs seated next to the collar worn by the Grand Secretary, whose emblem is a pair of crossed quills.
