Elected after John Hopkinson, Ewing held the Professorship from 1890 to 1903. He resigned to become the Director of Naval Education at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. During his tenure, Ewing established the Department in Free School Lane and consolidated the Workshops as an essential component of students' training. Ewing, his wife and children took a holiday in Switzerland with Hopkinson and his family in August 1898. Ewing decided not to accompany Hopkinson and his son Jack and two of his three daughters on the Alpine climb; the Hopkinson family were roped together, and all four fell to their deaths. A plaque records the event on the old laboratories in Free School Lane; Hopkinson's widow made a substantial donation to complete the new wing.
