Wood was an excellent public speaker and talented writer. Whilst at Cambridge, he twice won the Le Bas Prize for the best English Essay on the Subject of General Literature. He worked as a clerk in the Patent Office before joining the Society's staff in 1872, and was knighted in 1890. During Wood's tenure as Secretary, the Society held three major exhibitions: Health (1884); Inventions (1885); and the Colonial Exhibition (1886). Wood was appointed Secretary to the British Committee of the Paris Exhibition in 1889, and later the Secretary to the Royal Commission for the Chicago Exhibition of 1893. Wood was also a keen photographer. He was President of the Royal Photographic Society (1894–1896), and Chairman of the English Branch of Kodak. He was the author of the first publication on the history of the Society, 'A History of the Royal Society of Arts' (1913).
