A prominent puritan politician and administrator. He served as Governor of Massachussetts from 1636–1637, but later returned to England. A leading republican in the Commonwealth of 1649–1653 he strongly opposed Cromwell’s dissolution of the Rump Parliament. Although not a regicide Charles II considered him dangerous; he was found guilty of treason, and beheaded on Tower Hill in 1662. The identification as Vane has been questioned but not disproven.
