Sausmarez, was born in Guernsey, the son of Reverend Havilland de Sausmarez and Anne Priaulx Walters. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University in 1883 with a Bachelor of Arts. In 1881 he was admitted as a barrister of the Inner Temple and called to the Bar in November 1884. Sausmarez was a judge of various British courts in Africa and Asia, the Ottoman Empire and China and was knighted in 1905.
