David Abercrombie Donaldson studied at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) from 1932–1937. In his final year of study, he won the Haldane Travelling Scholarship and on his return from time spent in Italy and France he joined the GSA as a part time member of staff. He became a full-time lecturer in 1944 and Head of the Drawing and Painting Department in 1967. Regarded as one of Scotland's leading portrait artists of the late twentieth century, he was commissioned by the GSA to paint this portrait of its Director prior to his retirement in 1981.
