Sir Granville Bantock (1868–1946) is seated, holding a pipe. Half-length, he is turned to the left. He wears a heavy overcoat, is in mid-life and has brown hair and a grey beard. He sits against a green background. This painting was copied by the artist in 1957 from an original portrait which he painted in 1933 (see the National Portrait Gallery). Bantock studied at the Royal Academy of Music from 1889 to 1893. He became Principal of the Birmingham and Midland School of Music 1900–1908, and Peyton Professor of Music, Birmingham University 1908–1934.
