George Johnson (1818–1896) was an authority on kidney diseases and cholera, earning him the nicknames, ‘Kidney Johnson’, and ‘Castor Oil Johnson’ – referring to his treatment for cholera cases. He was the first resident medical tutor at King’s College Hospital and held many appointments there, as well as a number of offices at the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). Johnson was outspoken and somewhat arrogant, and on one occasion had to have a quarrel with a colleague settled by the RCP. The plaque on the frame informs us that this portrait was presented to the sitter by his colleagues and pupils at King’s College.
