Sir George Burrows (1801–1887) studied at Caius College, Cambridge, where he was a distinguished undergraduate and prominent cricketer and oarsman. In 1841 he became full physician and sole lecturer on medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, an office he held for 22 years. Burrows also joined the Royal College of Physicians, where he served as president from 1871 to 1876. At this time he was also physician-extraordinary to Queen Victoria, and was made a baronet in 1874. Burrows was also president of the British Medical Association, whose founder, Sir Charles Hastings, was his cousin. He published a book on 'The Disorders of the Cerebral Circulation' in 1864, as well as articles on scarlet fever, measles and haemorrhage in Tweedie's 'Library of Medicine'.
