Sir Frederick Gustavus Fowke (1782–1856) was the Provincial Grand Master of Leicestershire from 1850 to 1856. Masonic provinces roughly equate to the counties of England and Wales, and operate as regional grand lodges under the jurisdiction of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales. This portrait is a copy of one in Freemasons’ Hall in Leicester. In it he is wearing the regalia of a member of the Ancient and Accepted Rite, another Masonic order, and a medal, or jewel, for the Prince of Wales Lodge No.259, which is identified by its use of the crest of ostrich feathers, associated with the Princes of Wales.
