Portrait of Sir Frederick Bramwell (1818–1903), Bt, FRS. Bramwell was an eminent Engineer and was elected a member of the Society in 1874 he served as Vice-President, Treasurer, and Chairman of Council (1880–1881) and chairman of the Society's Mechanics Committee. In 1901 at the time of the Society's Presidential election the Duke of Cornwall, who later became George V, was away on a world tour, and Sir Frederick Bramwell was selected as a temporary President. When the Prince returned home in Autumn 1901, Bramwell resigned as President of the Society and the Prince was formally invited to accept the office.
