Half-length portait of Tovey, who is standing, his body turned slightly to the right, his head to the left. He wears a grey-blue jacket and waistcoat and a dark-blue tie, and has a light-blue handkerchief in his breast-pocket. The background is dark, with indications of a curtain at the right. Much of the board is left bare of paint at the right bottom of the picture.
