Donald Gibson (1908–1991) was educated in Manchester. He set up practice in 1933 and in 1939 he was made City Architect and Town Planning Officer for the County and City of Coventry. He therefore took much of the responsibility for rebuilding Coventry after the destruction of the centre of the city in 1941–1942, a calamity that he welcomed. After 1939, his working life was passed entirely in local and central government as County Architect for Nottinghamshire (1955–1958), Director of Works for the War Office (1958–1962), and Controller General at the Ministry of Public Building and Works until 1969. He was president of the Royal Institute of British Architects 1964–1965. The artist Olwyn Bowey studied at the West Hartlepool School of Art and at the Royal College of Art.
