Derrick Popley was a merchant who became Sheriff of Bristol in 1630. He was Knighted on 28th November 1671 at Whitehall, London. His Coat of Arms was granted by Sir Edward Walker, Garter King of Arms, on 16th February 1672.

Born Mary Craddock, the daughter of a Suffolk clergyman and Puritan, Beale was one of the few woman artists in England in the seventeenth century. In 1652, she married Charles Beale, an amateur painter who became her assistant. She worked in London from 1654, establishing a studio in 1666. She is buried in St James's, Piccadilly.
