Sir David Lumsden (b.1928) was Principal of the Royal Academy of Music 1982–1993. Executed from life in the Duke's Hall, the painting shows the Academy's main concert hall following its major refurbishment, with three images of Sir David. In the foreground he stands in the upper balcony of the Hall; in the middle ground he is shown on the stage at the harpsichord, performing with violinist Howard Davis, cellist Anna Holmes, and flautist William Bennett. In the background he is seated at the console of the organ with Peter van den Heuvel, the organ builder. Lady Lumsden is also shown seated, in the foreground. The painting is in effect a historic document, showing the placement of the re-hung paintings in the Hall following their restoration, and new orchestral seating and lighting arrangements.
