Sir Charles Frederick William Illingworth (1899–1991) was born in Halifax in Yorkshire and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. His education was interrupted by war service in the Royal Flying Corps, part of which he spent as a prisoner of war. In 1939 he succeeded Archibald Young as Regius Professor of Surgery at the University of Glasgow. He was one of the most famous and skilled surgeons of his day and was Honorary Surgeon to the Queen in Scotland.
