Born in North Shields, Byrom Bramwell was the son and grandson of medical practitioners. He was educated at Cheltenham College, obtained a MB with Honours from Edinburgh in 1869 and a MD (Gold Medal) in 1877. After the customary house appointments, he joined his father in general practice and showed his leaning towards teaching by obtaining a part-time lectureship on medical jurisprudence at Durham University. Five years later he relinquished general practice on his appointment as physician and pathologist to the Royal Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1879 Bramwell returned to Edinburgh having decided to make his way as a physician and clinical teacher. He was elected to the Fellowship of the College in 1880 and shortly afterwards lecturer on medicine at the Extra-mural School.
