Sir Benjamin Hallowell Carew (born Benjamin Hallowell) is remembered as a companion and close friend of Admiral Nelson. He fought with Nelson, most notably in the 1798 Battle of the Nile and at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. In 1799, Hallowell famously presented with Nelson with a macabre gift to celebrate their victory on the Nile. It was a coffin made from the main mast of L'Orient, a French ship that had been destroyed in the battle. Nelson was buried in this coffin in 1806. Hallowell took the additional surname Carew when he succeeded to the family estates.
