Arthur Vick was educated at Waverley Grammar School, Birmingham and Birmingham University. From 1936 to 1944 he lectured in physics at University College, London and from 1939 to 1944 was also assistant director of the Ministry of Supply. In 1945 he received the OBE. He lectured in physics at Manchester University (1944–1950) and was professor of physics at the University of North Staffordshire (1950–1959). Between 1959 and 1964 he was deputy director and then director of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell and from 1964 to 1966, was member for research at the Institute of Physics. From 1966 to 1976, he was vice-chancellor of Queen’s. He received a knighthood in 1973. In 1977 he became pro-chancellor of the University of Warwick. He served on numerous academic and advisory committees and received honorary doctorates from Belfast, Birmingham, Dublin, Keele, Kent and the National University of Ireland.
