This portrait of Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842–1900), a former student and professor of the Royal Academy of Music, was created as part of set and used in the pageant to celebrate the Centenary of Academy in 1922. The source was probably a print of the portrait (1888) by Sir John Everett Millais, now in the National Portrait Gallery. The resultant painting was held high on a pole, accompanied by those of others in the series. When a student at the Academy, Sullivan studied piano with William Sterndale Bennett and composition with John Goss and was the first recipient of the Mendelssohn Scholarship, which was extended for two years in order to send him to the Leipzig Conservatory, where he also undertook conducting studies. The Academy holds, among other items, the manuscript score of 'The Mikado'.
