Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie (1847–1935) is depicted three-quarter length wearing the academic robes of an Oxford Doctor of Music, an honorary award presented to him by the University in 1924.The cream embroidered robe with dark scarlet sleeves with red bands is worn by him over a black suit, and he wears a black hat. He faces forward, when elderly, with his right hand resting on the back of a chair. Sir Alexander was Principal of the Royal Academy of Music, 1888–1924, a composer and violinist, and was a King’s Scholar at the Academy. With Sir George Grove he founded the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, and oversaw the Academy’s move from Tenterden Street to Marylebone and the celebration of its Centenary in 1922. As President of the International Musical Society, 1908–1912, Mackenzie also guided the Congresses in Vienna (1909) and London (1911), the latter highlighting British music.
