The sitter joined 'Punch' in the 1920s, a journal to which he contributed many witty and humorous writings. Although called to the Bar, he never practised and instead adopted politics as his profession. He was an independent Member of Parliament for Oxford from 1935 to 1950.

Cosmo Clark studied at Goldsmith's College School of Art, the Académie Julian in Paris and the Royal Academy Schools where he won a gold medal. He worked mostly in London.
