The artist said about this piece in 2007: "As a small child arriving in the dark to visit my grandparents I can recall being shepherded down the street under red smoke laden clouds and hurried past an opening in the terraced houses. What was that exciting and frightening strange new world of flickering flames and shadows belching smoke and steam with the clunking and clanking that I had seen? 70 years later I was to paint that scene with different emotions. I was satisfied with the painting when a cousin spontaneously pointed a finger at a certain point and said 'That's where Uncle Ralph used to stand'. My grandfather and sons gave their lives to hewing coal by pick and moving it by shovel from lying, kneeling or crouching positions in inhumanly hot and wet conditions, their families would depend on it.
