The relatively large scale of the figures and the subject with Italianate ruins recall the influence of Pieter van Laer on Wouwermans’s early work, while the spirited execution suggests a date in the 1650s. The 4th Marquess of Hertford’s agent, Samuel Mawson, wrote to his patron in 1859 describing how he had hung the ‘charming little upright Wouwermans as the centre picture’ in the ‘octagon room’ (now the Oval Drawing Room) at Hertford House.
