The city of Haarlem where van Wieringen worked appears in the background of this marine. The Groote Kerk of St Bavo is visible in the centre. Several ships are in difficulty in the heavy sea and some cargo has been lost overboard. This may be a late work influenced by the monochrome style of Jan Porcellis to whom this picture was attributed when acquired by the Bodleian Library.
