There is another painting by Mulier in the collection, BHC0818, which contains the same subject and has exactly the same measurements. Although as pendants they would rather have opposite weather conditions, there might be a connection between the two paintings. They do have opposite compositions with the one depicting three ships moving from left to the right distance and the other depicting three ships moving from the left distance to the right. In the second painting, BHC0818, Mulier has brought in more light and the waves are shorter and painted somewhat more roughly. It seems that the large wave in the front on the right of the first painting, BHC0821, is practically the same as the large wave in the front on the left of the second painting, BHC0818.
