Entered the Navy in 1837. The following year he took part in the blockade of Kedah, on the West coast of the Malay Peninsula and fought at Canton in 1841 and Woosung in 1842. He was prominent in advocating a search expedition for missing Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin and in 1850 was appointed to the command of the Pioneer in the Arctic expedition under Captain Austin, and performed a remarkable sledge-journey to the western extremity of Prince of Wales Island. He published an account of this voyage, entitled Stray Leaves from an Arctic Journal (1852). Osborn also published articles in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine and in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society.
