Frederick Goodall was one of several artistic children of the eminent engraver Edward Goodall. He left school at thirteen to work in his father’s studio, but quickly turned to painting and by the age of fifteen was receiving commissions for drawings. His early paintings focused on subjects such as rural scenes and children at play, but a trip to Egypt over winter in 1858–1859 changed his work dramatically and he began to depict aspects of Egyptian life as well as Biblical scenes.
