This painting is one of a pair showing a decorative pastoral scene.

This type of painting represented a rather idealised view of country life. The artist has painted the scene bathed in warm southern light to produce an enchanted mood. The landscape has been treated in a very artificial way and is a reminder of Greek and Roman times.
