Born in St Ives in 1918, Peter Lanyon was based in Cornwall for most of his life. With the arrival in 1939 of the trio of Hepworth, Nicholson and Gabo, new influences fed into Lanyon’s work and during the late 1950s his trips to America brought him into contact with Abstract Expressionism. It was, however, his passion for gliding, which he took up in 1959, that had one of the most profound effects on his work as he translated his airborne experiences into his paintings, collages and constructions
