Here the garden wall makes a division between the part of the garden being planted out in spring and the extraordinary shapes of trees from the Americas planted beyond. As with many of his paintings of this period, Bennett has been interested in seeing the abstract patterns of the man-made structures contrasting with the expanding organic forms of trees. With this painting, he has also contrasted the nursery grown trees within the walled garden with the enormous trees the other side of the wall.
