Boudin visited Fécamp, north of Le Havre, repeatedly between 1872 and 1894. He painted several versions of this scene, contrasting the slender masts of shipping in the harbour with the squat silhouette of the church tower beyond. When the art critic Sir Frederick Wedmore purchased this work for the National Museum in 1914, he described it as 'a Boudin of, I think, unsurpassable subtlety, which it is far from possible to appreciate in a moment.'
