In early 2005, David Hockney invited friends to his Los Angeles studio where he painted a series of full-length single and double portraits in just a few sittings. He worked directly onto the canvas, without photographic reference or preparatory drawing. Included in the series was this self-portrait, which depicts the artist at work on a painting of himself and his friend the New York-based curator, Charlie Scheips.
