Hersch’s academic training and flair for portraiture can be seen in this richly coloured self-portrait of the artist at work. His flamboyant attire contrasts with his sense of purpose and direct expression. Hersch was born in Berlin and studied at the Art Academy. After graduating he won the prestigious Rome Prize and spent 1910–1912 in Italy, before establishing a successful portrait practice in Berlin. During the First World War he served as an Official War Artist and his sitters included President Hindenburg, but in 1939 he settled in England with his wife to escape Nazi persecution. After the war Hersch exhibited at the Royal Academy and became a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, completing a large mural 'Triptych in Blue' of allegorical nudes, presented to Wandsworth Town Hall in 1948.
