Hilde Goldschmidt was born in Leipzig and, like Schwittters, studied at the Dresden Academy of Art. She was a pupil of the Expressionist artist, Oskar Kokoschka, and later moved to Kitzbühel in Austria. Fleeing from the Nazis in 1939, she ended up in the Lake District on the Langdale Estate, near Ambleside, and later befriended Kurt Schwitters. After the death of her mother in 1949, Goldschmidt returned to Kitzbühel. Her style changed considerably as she moved away from the agitated energy of her Expressionist Lake District works towards a more controlled ‘Cubist’ manner. In this painting, she uses heavy, controlled brushstrokes and blocks of colour to construct a solid, serene image, perhaps reflecting her contentment at having finally returned home.
