Hugh Adam Crawford studied at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) from 1919–1923. He then went to London, only to return in 1925 to join the staff of the GSA where he initially taught illustration. Crawford was a competent portrait artist and had a strong interest in fifteenth-century fresco painting and was commissioned by the Roman Catholic church to produce a series of murals. By the end of the 1920s he had moved into the drawing and painting department and in 1938 took over from David Forrester Wilson as its head. He left the GSA in 1948 and moved to Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen.

This painting was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014.
